Sturgeon Bay (Trip #6)

22 Photos of ships that are at Bay Shipbuilding either in temporary (or long-term) lay-up, in for repairs/inspection, or are "new builds." Let's start with the new-builds: there are currently two tanker barges in the large graving dock that are under construction. One of them, the Petrochem Supplier is nearing completion and is mostly painted in the green & white Petrochem colors. The tug, Corpus Christi, arrived late last week, and will (presumably) be paired with the Petrochem Supplier. The Great Lakes Maritime Academy training vessel, State of Michigan, is high and dry, presumably for its 5-year survey (inspection which is needed for certification to sail). Interlake Steamship currently has 4 vessels at the yard: the Charles M. Beeghly has had new engines installed (changing it from a steamship to s diesel) and is nearly ready to sail. The Lee A. Tregurtha arrived last week for temporary lay-up, the 1004-ft.-long Mesabi Miner is also in temporary lay-up, while the John Sherwin, which was brought to Bay Shipbuilding late last year for conversion to a self-unloader, is once again in limbo (at least until the economy picks up - when they brought her in for conversion last year, shipping was in high demand and there was demand for more vessels. Then, along came October when the economy crashed, and all of a sudden there was a surplus of shipping. That condition still prevails; hopefully not for too much longer!). Other vessels in temporary lay-up include the Buffalo, Arthur M. Anderson, and Philip R. Clarke. With the automobile industry in shambles, the steel industry and shipping companies have both been hard hit.
