Come, Share My Photos With Me

As an amateur photographer, I wanted a place to display my photos for
all to enjoy. This Site is a collection of (mostly) ship photos from
such diverse places as The Soo Locks, Menominee, MI, Marinette, WI,
Escanaba, MI, Green Bay, WI and more. The "General Photo Gallery" has
a variety of subject matter. Most of the Photo Galleries are done up
in a "Photo Essay" format ... (All photos by author, except where noted)

Photos To The Right:

#1 - New "Menominee & Marinette Parks & Things" photo gallery Click Here to see the photos of parks and places of interest around Menominee & Marinette (Henes Park, River Park Campground, Red Arrow Park, Pederson Park, Marinette City Park and much more).

#2 - The Amelia Desgagnes arrived on April 14 with a load of pig iron for Marinette Fuel & Dock. This ship officially opens the 2009-2010 shipping season in Menominee & Marinette. Click here to view all of the action for 2009 in our ports.

#3 - I took a trip across western Michigan's Upper Peninsula, northern Wisconsin and Minnesota from Carlton, up through Duluth and up the north coast as far as Schroeder from Sept. 28 to Oct. 7, 2008. I was after photographs of waterfalls again, and came back with many photos. I added a new "Waterfalls Page (new)" page with links to "Minnesoata Waterfalls", "Wisconsin Waterfalls" and up-dated "Michigan's Upper Peninsula Waterfalls" pages.

#4 - The ex-Oglebay Norton steamship, Reserve, was brought to Menominee, MI on Aug. 1, 2007 to be converted into a barge. I was asked by the owner to take weekly "progress photos" for his archives; AND he granted me the permission to share the photos of that project with you. Click Here to see the progress week by week. Since these photos were for archival purposes, the quality wasn't my usual effort - some were over-exposed to show detail, etc.

Feb. 29 Update - A 30-photo slide show of the removal of the pilothouse from the Reserve and a 25-photo slideshow of the removal, addition of an 8-foot extension, and re-installing of the pilothouse of the tug, Victory, which will eventually be paired with the Reserve! ALSO: Photos from the christening of the James L. Kuber (ex-Reserve) on March 29, 2008, and their departure on April 13!

Last Updated on April 13, 2008 ... James L. Kuber (ex-Reserve) departed on its "Maiden Voyage" - the "Reserve Conversion" project is now officially finished, and there will be no more photos on that page.

#5 - Menominee & Marinette got rocked by a good, old-fashioned nor'easter on May 11, 2006. Here, the Menominee North Pier Lighthouse gets pummeled by a breaking wave. - Click here for more storm photos

The (old) USCG Mackinaw was in Menominee on Dec. 7, 2005. It was open for tours (as was the "New" Mackinaw) from noon until 5 p.m.

Click here for onboard photos of both ships.

The Interstate Bridge between Menominee, MI and Marinette, WI was rebuilt in 2005.

Glimpses of the World Famous Soo Locks

Lake Superior lies 21-feet above the level of the "lower lakes", Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The Soo Locks were built so ships could freely pass between these two areas. There are 4 American Locks and one Canadian Lock. The 4 Locks on the American side of the St. Mary's River are:

MacArthur Lock - 800-ft x 80-ft
Poe Lock - 1200-ft x 110-ft
Davis Lock - 1350-ft x 80-ft
Sabin Lock - 1350-ft x 80-ft

The Canadian Lock is mostly used for smaller craft

Only the MacArthur and Poe Locks are in every-day use. The Davis is used occasionally for emergencies, or on high traffic days for tour boats and an occasional freighter due to the shallow 23-ft. depth of the Lock. The Sabin Lock is out-of-service.
