Marlene Green Departs Menominee.

On Saturday, April 19, 2008, the G-Tug, Indiana, arrived in Menominee to assist the Marlene Green out of the Menominee River. To do this they first had to pass through the Ogden Street Bridge with its tricky line-up: the channel in the Menominee River lies to the Marinette side of the river before angling back to the middle of the Ogden Street Bridge. The tug and ship worked hard, but well, to get the line-up right and then passed safely through. One incident caused some alarm, and it had nothing to do with the actions of the tug or the ship. A fisherman in a small fishing boat decided (somewhat unwisely) to pass between the old carferry, Viking I, which is docked on the Menominee side of the river, and the (moving) tug and ship. Listening to the scanner, the small boat was in danger of getting sucked in from the prop wash of the tow and they were afraid it might flip over! Well, thankfully that did not happen! Then, when the tow came out of the inner harbor they were greeted with a "wall" of small fishing boats blocking the mouth of the river near the lighthouse! FOUR separate time the tug blew 5 blasts on its horn (the international DANGER signal) trying to get the fishermen to move! The ship also blew two danger signals of its own. As always happens this time of year, the fishermen held their ground until almost the last minute before grudgingly moving out of the way. One of these times someone isn't going to get out of the way fast enough and there is going to be a tragedy! FISHERMEN - - - WAKE UP!!!
