The Pere Marquette 41/Undaunted entered the Menominee River in the wee hours of Sunday, Dec. 28. The vessel was carrying a load of pig iron for Marinette Fuel & Dock. The Basic Marine tug, Erika Kobasic, was on hand to handle icebreaking duties for the vessel. Moderate ice in the Menominee River slowed their progress to the dock; a dock they reached sometime before 2 a.m. The tug, Undaunted, backed out of the notch in the barge sometime in the early morning hours and docked a short way away from its barge, Pere Marquette 41. About 1:30 p.m., the Undaunted pulled away from the dock and began breaking ice alongside the barge. She was joined shortly thereafter by the icebreaking tug, Erika Kobasic. The Undaunted was back in the notch of its barge shortly after 3 p.m., and the vessel departed the dock around 3:20 p.m. The ice still had a few tricks up its sleeve, however, and it took a little maneuvering back and forth to finally get underway from the dock. The tug and barge cleared Menominee North Pier Lighthouse shortly after 4:30 p.m., turned around out in the bay of Green Bay, and headed for their next port of call.
